A4E - Association for Equality wholeheartedly condemns the brutal assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and extends sincere condolences to her family.
One of the pillars of a functioning democracy is a free, unfettered press and if we are to retain our democracy, all journalists must be allowed to do their work unhindered by fear and pressure.
Unfortunately, female journalists are more likely to experience threats and violence than their male colleagues.
A 2016 report by OSCE concluded that “female journalists and bloggers around the globe are inundated with threats of murder, rape and physical violence.” In the last three months alone, 3 audacious women journalists were brutally murdered – Kim Wall, Gauri Lankesh and Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Democracy thrives when a plurality of voices are heard.
